SharePoint Online document library folder permissions
I have created different types of folders in the SharePoint Online document library (Company Resources) as per our requirements. The folders are usually available to everyone who has permission to the SharePoint Online site.
But in this case, I would like to share the folders with a specific person by using the different levels of permissions. Similarly, we can find the respective user (Who accesses the folder) and also stop sharing files/ folders, or change the permission levels of the users.
Now, see the below picture, that can be describes the different types of folders in the SharePoint document library:

Note:
We can’t share multiple document library items at the same time, instead of that we can add the items into the folder and then share the folder.
Default SharePoint Online document library permission levels
In this section, we will discuss the default SharePoint Online document library permission levels. Any SharePoint document library can provide the default permission levels. We can use these permission levels in the folders as well.
In the SharePoint Online document library edit permissions page, we get all 6 levels of the permission access such as:
- Full control: Users can manage a custom folder with full control.
- Design: Users can view, add, update, delete, approve, and customize the document folder.
- Edit: The user can add, edit and delete folders; can view, add, update, and delete folder items and documents.
- Contribute: Users can view, add, update, and delete folder items and documents.
- Read: Users can view pages and folder items and download documents.
- View: Users can view pages, folders, and documents. Documents can be viewed in the browser but not downloaded.
See the below figure that shows which are the SharePoint Online document library default permissions:

This is the default SharePoint Online document library permission level.
Provide folder-level permissions in SharePoint Online document library
Let us know about providing folder-level permissions in the SharePoint Online document library. For this follow the below-mentioned steps to give folder-level access such as:
- Open the SharePoint Online document library (Company Resources), where we get different types of folders.
- Select the specific folder (Resource documents) by using the round circle -> Click on the ECB menu (…) to show more actions. Now select the Manage access like below:

- In the Manage Access window, we can get all information like Links to give access, Direct access, and Advanced permission settings.
- Now, select the Advanced option as per our requirement as shown below:

- In the Advanced permission page, select the option Stop Inheriting Permissions to break permissions inheritance from the parent (Company Resources).
- For suppose, we can’t break permissions inheritance from the parent. Here, we can see the following statement (This folder inherits permissions from its parent) as shown below:

- After breaking permission inheritance in the SharePoint Online document library, we get the option to Grant permissions and it will give the following statement (This folder has unique permissions) like the below:

- Now, click on Grant permissions, here we can invite people or a group (Chandrika Kambala) with their’s names or email address for sharing the document library folder and include a personal message with an invitation (Optional).
- Click on the Show Options like the below:

- Now, we can get default permission levels like Full control, Design, Edit, Contribute, Read, and Restricted View.
- But, here we can see that by default the Edit permission is granted to the permission level as shown below:

- Here, we can change folder-level permission from Edit to Read access to the user as per our requirement.
- Click on the Share Button like the below:

Similarly, we can find another option (With a Share icon) to share a respective folder with the user by using folder-level permissions. To get this just follow the below steps such as:
- Open the SharePoint document library (Company Resources) -> Select the folder named Resource Documents and click on the Share icon as shown below:

- In the Send link window -> Provide the User name, group, or email (Chandrika Kambala) and select the menu drop-down to decide whether the user can edit or just view the folders.

- Now select the Can View option and enter the message (Optional) then click on the Send button to the User’s Outlook as shown below:

- Now, we get a confirmation window for sharing the document library folder like the below:

Customize or Manage folder-level permissions in SharePoint document library
Likewise, here we will discuss the customize or Manage the folder-level permissions in the SharePoint document library such as:
- Edit the SharePoint document library folder-level permissions
- Remove the SharePoint document library folder-level permissions
- Check the SharePoint document library folder-level permissions
- Delete all unique folder-level permissions in the SharePoint document library
Edit SharePoint document library folder-level permissions
Suppose, we have to edit the document library folder-level permissions after providing the unique permission to the folder. For this follow the below steps:
- Open the SharePoint document Advanced permissions page by using the above-mentioned steps in the previous section (Provide folder-level permissions in the SharePoint Online document library).
- Now, select the checkbox to edit folder-level permissions to the name of the user or group (Chandrika Kambala).
- Next, we select Edit user permissions options under the Modify section at the top of the permission page as shown below:

- In the Edit permissions page -> Edit the folder-level permission from Read access to Restricted view access as per our requirement.
- Click on the Ok button as shown below:

- Now, see the below picture that can show how to change the folder-level permission:

Remove SharePoint document library folder-level permissions
Similarly, in this section, we will learn how to remove the SharePoint document library folder-level permissions. In this case, follow the below-mentioned steps such as:
- Open the SharePoint document Advanced permissions page, select the checkbox to remove folder-level permissions to the name of the user or group (Chandrika Kambala)
- Click on Remove user permissions.

- Once, we selected Remove user permissions. It will give a confirmation window that you are about to remove all permissions for the following user or group.
- Next, click on the Ok button.

- Now see the below image that how to remove/delete a folder-level permission in the SharePoint document library:

Similarly. whenever we create folder-level permissions, where we get the Stop Sharing option for users. Follow the below steps to stop sharing permissions.
- Open the SharePoint document library -> Select folder (Resource Documents) then click on the Manage access under the ECB menu (…) like below:

- In the Manage access window -> Select a specific group (Dutch Crafters Visitors) menu bar and then select Stop sharing as shown below:

- Now, we get a confirmation window then select the Remove button to stop sharing folder-level permissions.

Check SharePoint document library folder-level permissions
Likewise, here we can check the SharePoint document library folder-level permissions. By using this feature, we get the permission levels and additional factors that affect a user/group’s access.
Follow the below steps to check the document library folder-level permissions such as:
- Open the SharePoint document Advanced permissions page, select the checkbox to check folder-level permissions to the name of the user or group (Chandrika Kambala)
- Click on Check Permissions under the checking section.

- In the Check permissions window -> Enter the name of the User or Group (Chandrika In the Check permissions window -> Click on the Check Now button as shown below:

- Now, see the below figure can explore the respective user folder-level permission (Restricted View):

Delete all unique folder-level permissions in SharePoint document library
Let us know how to delete all unique folder-level permissions in the SharePoint document library. For this follow the below steps:
- Open the SharePoint document Advanced permissions page -> Select the Delete unique permissions, it will give a confirmation window then select the Ok button as shown below:

- Here, see the below image where we get Stop Inheriting Permissions to break permissions inheritance from the parent and also find the following statement -> This folder inherits permissions from its parent (Dutch Crafters).
