How to Use Drill Up and Drill Down in Power BI Bar Chart?

Recently, I was working with a Power BI Bar chart where I needed to change the navigation data from one level to a more detailed level.

This article will explain how to work with the bar chart drill-down and drill-up features in Power BI. Also, I will tell you how many ways we can access the drill feature.

How to Use Drill Up and Drill Down in Power BI Bar Chart

Power BI bar chart drill-down and drill-up is a very important feature that helps to navigate data, allowing you to move from one level to a more detailed level or vice versa in a Power BI report.

The first Power BI Bar chart shows only profit by year. After applying the drill feature, the Pie chart shows profit by year, quarter, month, and day.

We have a SharePoint list (Orders) that contains below columns with various data types:

Note:

We can perform drill down or drill up only hierarchy data. We cannot see the drill icons presented without hierarchy data at the top of the Power BI Visual.

We access the drill features in three different ways.

  • Top of the visual (Header Icon) in Power BI.
  • Data/Drill tab in Power BI.
  • Right-click on the visual in Power BI.

Now we see one by one how to access the drill features.

1. Open Power BI Desktop and load the data. Then, you see data in the Data pane.

2. Under the Visualizations pane, click the Stacked bar chart. Then a empty Stacked bar chart present in the Power BI report view.

3. Then drag the “Profit” into the X-axis and the “Order Date” into the Y-axis. After that, you see the top of the visual four icons are presented. We can use the “Drill Down & Drill Up” options whenever there is a hierarchy.

4. Now, start using the drill feature using these four symbols. if you click Double Down Arrow, it will show “Quarterly-wise.”It will show the next level in the hierarchy. You see the bar, title, and y-axis name changed.

5. when you click on this Double Down Arrow, it will move one more level further and show a monthly summary. Similarly, Day summary.

6. Now, we are in the “Sum of profit by Day” visual. I need to go to the previous level, “Sum of Profit by Month.” Here, we use the Drill up, which is the up arrow. Check the screenshot below.

7. When you need to see two levels in one visual, Click the last two down arrows: “Expand all down on level in the hierarchy.” By clicking on this option once it has taken us one hierarchy down, i.e., “Year & Quarter.”

8. Now, I want to see a particular bar drill, i.e., I want to see only the profit in “2017”. In this case, the single down arrow option helps: “Drill Mode is on: Click a data point to drill.”

Click the single down arrow, then choose the data bar.

In this process, you can use drill mode using the header icon.

The second way to apply the drill feature is to click on Data/Drill -> Drill action in the top navigation.

When you click “Expand next level,” it will Expand year and quarter. check the screenshot below.

Similarly way, you can use “Switch to next level,” “Drill up,” or “Drill down.”

You can apply drill mode using the data/drill tab in this process.
