Create Shortcut in SharePoint Document Library
Here, we will learn how to create a shortcut in the SharePoint Online document library. For Example, I have used a SharePoint document library (MB Documents)
To do that we have one source library (Product Library) and one destination library (MB Documents). In the destination library, we will create the shortcut of a file that belongs to the source library.
Steps to create a shortcut in the SharePoint document library.
- Open a SharePoint Online Document Library -> Click on Settings -> Select the Library settings.

- In the Library settings section, click on More library settings.

- In this Settings window, click on Advanced settings under General Settings.

- Now, in the Advanced settings window, select Yes under ‘Allow management of content types?’ -> Click on OK.

- Go back to the Settings window, and select Add from existing site content types under Content types.

- In this Add Content type window, insert the required values.
- Select site content types from: Select Document Content types.
- Available Site Content Types: Select the Link to a Document -> Click on Add.
- Content types to add = Once the site content type is added, it will appear in the Content type to add part.
- Click on OK as shown below.

- Go back to the SharePoint document library -> Copy the URL of the document library -> Expand the + New -> Select Link to a document.

- In this window, insert the value for Document Name and Document URL -> Click on OK.

- Here, you can see the shortcut of the SharePoint Document Library (MB Documents) as Mitchell Black Documents.

Create File Shortcut in SharePoint Document Library
Here we will learn how to create file shortcuts in the SharePoint Online document library. For Example, I have used one of my SharePoint document libraries (i.e., MB Policy Document)
- Open a SharePoint Online Document Library -> Click on the Settings icon -> Click on Library Settings

- Click on More library settings.

- Here, in the Settings window, click on Advanced settings under General Settings.

- In this Advanced Settings window, select Yes under Allow management of content types? -> Click on OK.

- Go back to the Settings window, and select Add an existing site content types under Content Types.

- In this Add Content type window, insert the required values.
- Select site content types from: Select Document Content types.
- Available Site Content Types: Select the Link to a Document -> Click on Add.
- Content types to add = Once the site content type is added, it will appear in the Content type to add part.
- Click on OK as shown below.

- Return to the SharePoint Library home page -> Select the File -> Click on the … ellipses -> Click on the Copy link.

- From this window, click on Copy to Copy the file URL -> Click on the close icon.

- Return to the SharePoint document library -> Expand the + New -> Select Link to a document.

- In this window, insert the value for Document Name and Document URL (paste the URL that you have Copied) -> Click on OK.

- In this SharePoint Document home page, you can see the shortcut of the file that you have created

Create a Folder Shortcut in SharePoint Document Library
In this section, we will see how we can create a folder shortcut in SharePoint Document Library. To do that, I have taken a SharePoint Online Document Library (Installation and Guide).
- Open a SharePoint Online Document Library -> Click on the Settings icon -> Click on Library Settings.

- In this Library settings window, click on More library settings.

- Click on Advanced settings under General Settings.

- In this Advanced Settings window, select Yes under Allow management of content types? -> Click on OK.

- In this Settings window, select Add an existing site content types under Content Types.

- In this Add Content type window, insert the required values.
- Select site content types from: Select Document Content types.
- Available Site Content Types: Select the Link to a Document -> Click on Add.
- Content types to add = Once the site content type is added, it will appear in the Content type to add part.
- Click on OK as shown below.

- Again go back to the SharePoint Library home page -> Select the File -> Click on the … ellipses -> Click on Copy link.

- Click on Copy to Copy the folder URL in this window -> Click on the close icon.

- In this SharePoint document library home page -> Expand the + New -> Select Link to a document.

- Insert the value for Document Name and Document URL in this window -> Click on OK.

- Here, you can see the SharePoint folder shortcut that we have created and click on it.

- Now, you can access the same document from the shortcut that we have created.

SharePoint Document Library Add Shortcut to OneDrive
Here, we will see how the SharePoint document library adds a shortcut to onedrive.
- Open a SharePoint Online Document Library whose shortcut you want to add to OneDrive.
- Click on Add shortcut to Onedrive.

- Here, you can see a window displaying Added 1 shortcut to My files in OneDrive.

- Now, open OneDrive home page -> Click on My files.

- Here, you can see the SharePoint Online Document Library’s shortcut will be added to OneDrive.

Add a Shortcut to a SharePoint Document in another Document Library
In this part, we’ll look at how to create a shortcut to a SharePoint document in another document collection.
For this, we have to add a content type (Link to a document) to the SharePoint Document Library where you want to add a shortcut from a different SharePoint Document Library.
In the above section, I have added a content type (Link to a document) in one of my SharePoint Document Library (MB Policy Documents).
- Open a SharePoint Document Library home page -> Select a file you want to create the shortcut -> Click on the … ellipses -> Click on Copy Link.

- This Link to the ‘Privacy Policy.pdf’ dialog box opens click on Copy.

- Now, open the SharePoint Document Library where we have to add shortcut -> Expand +New -> Click on Link to a document.

- In this window, insert the Document Name and paste the copied link in Document URL-> Click on OK.

- Now, we can see the shortcut is added from another SharePoint document library.
