How to Add Text Box in Power BI?

This Power BI tutorial will help you work with the text box in Power BI.

I recently worked on a Power BI report where I needed to give information about the report in the report view. To do this, Microsoft Power BI provides a feature called a text box.

In this tutorial, I will tell you what a text box is in Power BI and how to add text box in Power BI. Also, I will tell you how to add the measure to the text box in Power BI.

In Power BI, the text box is like a virtual sticky note to add to your reports. It allows you to include text or explanations to provide more context, instructions, or details about the data you’re presenting in visuals or reports in Power BI.

Now, I will tell you how to add a text box to the Power BI report.

1. Open the report or Power BI Desktop. Then, under the Home tab, click the Text box.

2. Then, a blank text box is added to the report view.

3. You can move the text box anywhere by simply dragging and dropping. Then, I increased the font size to 16 and added text as Financials Status.

We can also change the text to bold, italic, underlined, etc.

How to Add Measure to Text box in Power BI

Now, I will tell you how to add the measure to the text box in Power BI.

Here, we have a SharePoint list (Orders) that contains below columns with various data types:

1. Open Power BI Desktop and load data. Then, you see data in the Data pane.

2. Under the Home tab, click the New measure.

3. Then, in the formula bar, put the below expression.

Total Sales = SUM(Orders[Sales])

Where:

  • Total Sales = Name of the Measure
  • SUM = DAX Function
  • Orders = Name of the Table
  • Sales = Name of the Column

4. Similarly, you create Total Profit using the expression below.

Total Profit = SUM(Orders[Profit])

Where:

  • Total Profit = Name of the Measure
  • SUM = DAX Function
  • Orders = Name of the Table
  • Profit = Name of the Column

5. Under the Home tab, expand the Visual gallery. Then select Slicer visual.

6. Using the +Add data option, add City into the slicer Field.

7. Under the Home tab, expand the Visual gallery. Then select the Map visual.

8. Using the +Add data option, add City into the Location field.

9. Under the Home tab, click the Text box.

10. Then increase font size. Then click the Value button.

11. Next, Create a dynamic value that updates when your data dialog box opens. In the ‘How would you calculate this value‘ field, enter the column name you want to display. In my case, it’s ‘City‘. Then, click Save.

12. After that, I added the text ‘has total sales of‘ into the Power BI Text box. Then, I clicked on Value, selected ‘Total Sales (Measure)’ in the ‘How would you calculate this value‘ field, and clicked Save.

13. In a similar way, you add Total profit. After that, the text box looks like this.

14. When you click on any city in the Power BI slicer, you’ll notice the map and the Power BI text box dynamically change accordingly. Check the screenshot below.
